Comparable store sales numbers for September 2009 provide further evidence that the economy bottomed sometime during the summer and is now taking baby steps in a less than robust recovery. The month's weather was somewhat chillier than usual, giving consumers an impetus to 'winterize' their wardrobes a little earlier than usual. Finally, the year-over-year comparisons were quite favorable as the performance for some retailers since the collapse of Lehman Brothers had been simply woeful. The 'new normal' in consumer spending continues to firm its grip as high-priced apparel is shunned and bargain-hunting consumers seek value. The registers continue to ring at discounters such as TJX Companies and Ross Stores, while tumbleweed may be gathering outside of high-end retail stores. Aeropostale was the star of month as strapped teenagers found its merchandise more affordable than that of Abercrombie's. With employment approaching 10%, it is no surprise that department stores like Macy's and Dillard's have negative comp numbers, while the line at your local dollar store is out the door.
