Industry Performance

The department store sector showed some unusual strength in January, even Bon Ton Stores performed well. The apparel sector also did well, despite the warm start to the month. Both sectors benefited form gift cards, which has increasingly helped increase January sales. Mass merchandisers also had a good month, although all three industries were fairly promotional to clear slow moving holiday merchandise.
